Day 2:  Cultivating The Fallow Ground

As with any planting we do, it is imperative that we spend time preparing the fallow ground in our life. So many times in my life I have moved ahead of that process, and just decided to do what seemed like the more enjoyable thing, making something look pretty when what was hidden beneath the surface needed to be tended to first. Of any day of this series, this is the most important one to spend some time on. This “Day” takes some time, and is worth the effort it takes to prepare the heart for all that will come. The reward will be worth it, and we will truly be living in full bloom before we know it!

What is Fallow Ground?

The expression, “Break up your fallow ground” (Hos. 10:12; Jer. 4:3) means, “Do not sow your seed among thorns”, i.e., break off all your evil habits; clear your hearts of weeds, in order that they may be prepared for the seed of righteousness.

Land was allowed to lie fallow that it might become more fruitful; but when in this condition, it soon became overgrown with thorns and weeds. The cultivator of the soil was careful to “break up” his fallow ground, i.e., to clear the field of weeds, before sowing seed in it.

So says the prophet, “Break off your evil ways, repent of your sins, cease to do evil, and then the good seed of the word will have room to grow and bear fruit.”

Easton’s 1897 Bible Dictionary

There was a time when unforgiveness and anger were deep seated within my heart. I was angry from childhood abuse, and this played out in my ability to trust men, or anyone who wanted to get close to me.  I was full of fear that someone would really know me, and what was hidden beneath the surface.

There came a point in my life where I had to pull the weeds of bitterness, and throw out heavy rocks and debris that were cluttering up my heart. God could then planted new thoughts, and a new identity in my life, heart and mind, and I could begin the growth process.  If I had stayed in the dormancy of bitterness I would have died on the vine.  My heart would have been hardened and I wouldn’t have been able to experience all that God wanted to fulfill in my life.

If we want to live as beautiful daughters of the King, and display beauty for Him, we must cultivate our fallow ground.

Scripture of the day: To bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor. Isaiah 61:3

Question of The Day:  What is holding you back from experiencing all that God wants to do in your life?

Prayer of The Day: Dear God, I pray that you would reveal the areas where I need to cultivate the fallow ground in my life.  I don’t want anything holding me back from experiencing the abundant life you have created me for.  I am asking you Lord, for the strength to break off any bad habits, and old patterns of thinking, so that you can clear my heart of weeds, in order that I may be prepared for seeds of righteousness.

In your precious name, Amen.
